BMW’s X SUVs — the X3 and X5 — share engines, electronics, and maintenance needs with their sedan siblings, with SUV-specific suspension and cooling demands.
X5: tested in my garage
Our X5 project car is tested in my garage — follow the full journey on the X5 build page for the mods and maintenance we have personally done and documented.
X3: researched and community-vetted
We have not wrenched on an X3 in our own garage yet. Our X3 coverage is researched and community-vetted, cross-checked against factory fitment data and long-term owner reviews.

X3/X5 wheel fitment guide
X5: tested in our garage X3: researched fitment data — not firsthand-tested in our garage
SUV fitment is about presence without compromising the xDrive system. Keep rolling diameters matched within 1% on xDrive models. Stock SUV wheels sit tucked — spacers make the biggest visual difference here.
| Model / Use | Wheel | Tire | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| X5 street (square) | 20×9.5″ ET35 | 275/45R20 | Tested fitment; no rubbing at stock height. |
| X5 street (staggered) | 21×10″ ET35 F / 21×11.5″ ET38 R | 285/40R21 F / 325/35R21 R | Factory-style staggered; keep diameters matched for xDrive. |
| X3 street (square) | 19×8.5″ ET30 | 245/50R19 | Researched fitment; safe on stock suspension. |
| X3/X5 winter | 19×8.5″ ET35 (X3) / 20×9″ ET35 (X5) | 245/50R19 / 265/50R20 | Downsize for winter; verify brake clearance. |
Spacer starting points
- Stock SUV wheels: 15–20mm front and rear — stock wheels sit noticeably tucked.
- Aftermarket: Start with no spacer; add 10–15mm only if the setup tucks.
What rubs / needs fender work
- xDrive: Keep rolling diameter within 1% front-to-rear — mismatched tires can damage the transfer case.
- Air suspension: Cars with air suspension have less clearance at the lowest setting; test fit at all heights.
- Aggressive: 22″ wheels with low offsets may need fender work, especially when lowered.
Plug your setup into our wheel offset calculator to see exactly how poke and inner clearance change before you buy.
